中国海外留学生数量十年内增加了三倍多，其中下层中产阶级家庭留学生的比例快速上升：根据社科院的数据，2009年底来自下层中产阶级家庭的留学生还仅占留学生总数的2%，2010年底飚升到了34%。对多数有孩子在海外留学的家庭来说，钱不是问题，但对下层中产阶级和工人阶级家庭而言，钱是需要精打细算的，而海外留学的成本和归国后的职业报酬并不总能成比例，何况中国每年还有700万大学毕业生进入就业市场。中国富豪宗庆后曾批评他在海外留学的女儿即不懂中国企业国情又不懂国外情况。
